ARPSC Meeting Minutes January 21, 2008
Call to Order
  • Tom - KC8NJK at 19:05
  • 20 people in attendance
Old Business
  1. Approximately 7 in attendance still need City of Lansing ID cards. Will try to advise a week in advance when Lansing FD schedules the next photo session.
  2. 20 took the Ham in a Day Class, 7 LARPSC members were the instructors and 8 persons passed their Tech licenses during the 2 Saturdays of testing.
  3. Many FEMA certificates were turned in this evening but many are still needed from our members. MSP requires the FEMA certification to retain your RACES card. If you still need to complete FEMA courses, call Tom (KC8NJK) with your planned date for completion of the courses. If courses are not completed, RACES cards will need to be returned. Review the updated R.A.C.E.S. requirements on the LARPSC web site for details.
  4. We still need an LARPSC logo. Tom (KC8NJK) was given two partial designs for consideration. Please consider designing a logo for our organization.
  5. The weekly ARPSCS net on the 145.390 repeater is being well received. Averaging 12 - 15 check-ins each week. Thanks to KC8NJK (Tom) and WA8KZY (Mike) for stepping in unexpectedly to assume net control. (Good training by Rocky (K8DRB) is paying off with just these two examples.)
  6. Sgt. Mike Perez (N8OUN) requested we identify 6 individuals to receive ICSD PROX door cards for access to the ICSD EOC. 7 names were submitted but selection & cards have not been issued.
  7. No update on the District 1 D-Star project. Dennis (KB8ZQZ) will try to meet with Jeff Kludy (Lansing Radio Lab) to review possible towers for placement of the D-Start repeater.
  8. Ben (WX8BEN) advised the EAS protocols meeting went well with the 911 personnel. They have requested we notify them of strong straight-line winds and they will sound the sirens when appropriate. Several policies have been developed for use by the 911 center. CodeSpear continues to be developed for notification of key personnel.
  9. Dennis is working with John Imeson (N8JI) for a good, commercial quality radio for the UHF link for MEPIN. The MEPIN site still needs some installation tasks completed and those will be scheduled in the next few months.
  10. A volunteer is still needed to head up the Lansing EOC communications room remodel project. Contact Tom (KC8NJK) if interested. Our goal is to get this done this spring.
New Business
  1. Look at the R.A.C.E.S. requirements on our LARPSC web site. IS800 is no longer required. An active member is required to participate in at least 3 activities from several categories during the calendar year.
  2. Ben reported on the activities of CMARC. A youth net will start 2/1/08 @ 20:00 hrs with Corey (KD8BOQ) as net control. Rob Dale (N8GSK), WLNS meteorologist will be speaking at the March meeting. A General class is planned for the spring. Keep an eye on the CMARC web site.
  3. Bill's (W8TTS) IRLP link is working well. Listen on 146.46 and join in with the fun. We need to consider the use of the IRLP link during disasters and develop protocol & work to get the proper agreements for use of the station. An IRLP Google Earth overlay is available on the main www.irlp.net web site.
  4. Three After Action Reports (AAR) were received from a Skywarn net in December. The AAR’s will be combined and assigned to 2 or 3 persons to review and create a summary of the event. The summary will contain the following 4 sections: Event description, Number of participating stations, Summary of items that worked well, Summary of items needing improvement. Dave (K8QH) will collect the reports from the web and enlist 2 or 3 members to review & develop the summary. The report will then be presented at our LARPSC meeting for discussion. If you don't have web access, you can mail the report to Dave and he will type it into a report for use by the reviewers.
  5. After the Silver Bells event, Trent Atkins, Lansing EMD requested we develop a way to send more than 1 picture back to the EOC. A detailed request was provided to Trent for new cameras and 902 MHz ATV equipment. No update on the purchasing of the equipment.
  6. Tom (KC8NJK) passed around a listing of our member's address that was requested by Trent Atkins. The list is not for publication.
  7. Weather Spotter Training scheduled for Saturday, March 29, 2008 at 10:00 AM EDT. Look at the LARPSC Web Site for time, details and future registration.
  8. http://www.lansingamateurradio.com is a new web site with links to several organizations and administered by Ben (WX8BEN).
  9. We are still looking for volunteers to work with CMARC during this summer’s ARRL Field Day to demonstrate our skills. Possible suggestions were live weather radar, live ATV or other modes of communications we use. This would be a good opportunity to show our skills to our fellow amateurs and the general public. Let Tom (KC8NJK) know if you are willing to work on this project.
